Trey Smith's 6-foot-4, 222-pound frame made him an intriguing prospect as a wide receiver. It wasn't enough for consistent playing time within Western Michigan University's football program.

Broncos coach Bill Cubit said Thursday that Smith is transferring to Division I-AA Georgia State.

Notes: Smith was the #189 rated WR by ESPN's Scouts, Inc and was a Top 10 WR in the State of Georgia in 2008.  He had offers from Akron, Marshall, East Carolina, Akron, Ball State before signing with Western Michigan.

Smith is a huge target that does not get many opportunities to catch the football in this scheme. His size and long arms are his best assets as he is purely a possession guy that is best utilized on underneath routes and in the [Red Zone] area on jump balls.

My Take: This is a tremendous grab as he will be a true Junior this fall.  This looks to be very much a family related decision as his quote from someone I talked to was:

"Transferring back home after this semester. I'm gone miss my Western Michigan Fam but I gotta do whats best for me and my family."

His size will give us another powerful Red Zone weapon in 2011 and 2012.  Great work by Coach Pugh, Coach Curry and the rest of the staff.

  1. A guy that barely played at a low level FBS. SaintDK10 won't be impressed.

  2. I wouldn't call Western Michigan low level. They went 6-6 in 2010 and went 5-7 in 2009. Smith signed with a team that came off of a 9-4 season and a Texas Bowl appearance.

Trust me Saint know talent and we are very happy Trey is a Panther.

  3. We are so loaded at wideout next year. We need to take advantage of it and throw more... especially if our running game suffers as much as it did this year.

So with a full season under their belts and spring coming, who do you think is the starting qb come next fall? I believe Star is simply better, but that being sick during fall practice cost him valuable time to learn the playbook, and then Drew was simply playing to well to be benched... I also wouldn't be surprised if we promised Drew he would be the first starting QB. He had an offer to BC after all. Would have taken something big to get him here. Even if Star plays the next two years, Drew would still be the man as a senior.

  4. Chris, I agree. We have tall, talented receivers and a game changer in Albert Wilson. Our running game will get better as our O Line continues to get better and work together as a unit. Yandell and Gilbert will also benefit from another spring together with Jacoby and the other OL man. Tech also prefered smaller lineman who could pull and cut block. We demand more in our pro style scheme.

In regards to the starting QB, it will be Drew Little's job to lose. He was incredibly poised this season and 8 out of his 11 INTs came against Lambuth and Alabama. 2 bad games out of 11 for a RS Freshman is extremely impressive. I believe he will likely get in better condition and work on his footwork this offseason. If he does that he will our starter for the duration of 2011.

Star will likely take over the back up role in 2011 and I fully expect him to pass Kelton on the depth chart. Kelton adds a change up and this offseason will be big for him in regards to what his goals are.
