From a source close to the situation:
John Thompson has pulled out of consideriation for the Defensive Coordinator job at Arkansas State. In an email exchange, there were multiple factors but Coach Thompson did not want to move his children again [Thompson has two sons, 14 and 11]. He said he'd like to come back home to Arkansas [at some point] but his family had to come first.
My take and what this means for 2011: This is great news for Georgia State fans. We will likely retain our DC for 2011 and I said after the Alabama game that keeping our coaching staff together is vital for long term success. John Thompson is a very good DC and game planner. With another offseason conditioning program, another recruiting cyle, getting NG Eduardo Curry back from injury and adding a very good pass rusher in DE Roderick Thompson, our defensive line will continue to get much better. This helps our LBs get better and in turn makes our young DBs continue to get better.

Monday Quick Hitters - 11.29.10
Happy Monday Panther Nation! I hope you've cleaned out the Thanksgiving leftovers out of your fridge and your Holiday decorations are hung with care.
Onto the links...
Recruiting Update: As CBC said in his call in show last Monday, we have 8 scholarships to give for the 2011 season prior to academic and football related (playing time, home sick, etc.) attrition. Our official scholarship total is at 55.5. We have one commit in DE Roderick Thompson from Mays HS. We will be updating this each Monday and I'll be giving you my projected breakdown closer to Signing Day.
Recruits Still in the GHSA Playoffs: It's no secret that we are after a Kicker to replace Senior Iain Vance. What's unclear is which kicker(s) we are after. We have mutual interest in both Roswell's Ty Long and Starr's Mill's Ryan Nowicki. The latter will face Tucker this weekend in Final 4 Playoff action.
Even Practice Squad Football Players Make the Paper: Nice Profile of Freshman OL Andrew Newsmith from Forsyth Central HS. Forysth News Link

CBC Mentions Recruiting Roadmap for 2011: I hope you were able to listen to CBC on WCFO 1160AM today, if not, check out the show on the radio Mondays @ 4pm. Today they were at STATS (which is a very good place to watch a game). I digress...CBC said We currently have 63 scholarships utilized (CBC calls them grants, as in grants in aid). We don't lose a single scholarship Senior and he expects us to offer 7 or 8 scholarships. He also expects 2-3 players to leave via attrition (As I say 5% is usually the rule).
In that rationale, I expect the mix to be 4 JUCO guys (at least 1 DL and 1 OL) then 4 HS (May HS Roderick Thompson is 1 at DE who's already committed).
My take on 2011 class: Grab 1 WR, 1 TE, 1 QB (yep, still expect 1 to leave the program by Spring), 1 LB, 2 DBs and 1 K. Not a sexy class by any means but addresses needs which is the #1 priority in recruiting.
Road Trip to Alabama: Athletics has teamed with SGA on the Alabama game. Ticket for the Alabama game costs $40 and the SGA bus is free (includes meal and tailgate). GSU Sports Link

Pay Good, Play Good: As I mentioned last week, CBC is the highest paid coach in FCS (formerly 1-AA). So how does that compare with FBS? He actually makes more than 15 coaches in the FBS. Mostly from the C-USA and MAC.
FCS Stats of Interest Through Week 4: Bo Schlechter would be currently 6th in the FCS with a punting average of 43.2 yards per punt but has only has attempted 13 punts this year. Absolutely our best weapon to this point.
See you at the Dome on Saturday!

WABE Interview with Coach Curry: CBC absolutely gets it when it comes to speaking to the media. Another very good radio interview. WABE Link
Roderick Thompson update - Mays defeated Dunwoody 21-13 on Saturday night. Not sure on Thompson's stats and have been efforting on multiple fronts. Mays plays @ Redan (Lamont McIntosh's alma mater, BTW) on Friday night.

Football Scores 1st Commit of 2011 (Updated)
According to the AJC's Chip Towers:
Georgia State, which opens its inaugural football season against Shorter on Sept. 2, landed a nice addition to its 2011 class with a commitment Monday from DE Roderick Thompson of Mays High. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound athlete plays on the end opposite the Tech commitment Caldwell, giving the Raiders’ one of the more formidable defensive fronts in Atlanta. “He’s my right-hand man,” Thompson said of Caldwell. “We’ve been hanging out since we were kids. We’re trying to be the best in the state.” Thompson chose the Panthers over a number of FCS offers, plus Grambling, Army and William & Mary. “[Georgia State is] just starting off and I feel like I can help them get better,” Thompson said. “Plus, they’re right here at home.”
Rivals.com Profile
From Mays HS Football Coach Dominic Calloway: "He is a big athletic defensive end that understands the game. He is a good student and he will be a good addition to your program on and off the field."
My take: A great grab and a kid that could have major offers coming. I hope the staff can keep him on board for February. He's very tall and has the body style to easily put on 25lbs. or more and be an impact DE. Great start to the recruiting cycle at a position of need.
