Georgia State Sweeps Hofstra Pride

What a great weekend for the Georgia State Panthers baseball team! Not only did the Panthers sweep the Hofstra Pride, but the Panthers were the biggest winners in the standings this weekend.

Quick Weekend Recap: The Panthers starting pitching was hot again this weekend. Great time of year to get on a hot streak too! Aidan Francis was able to get 2.2 innings of clean work in on Friday night. This is great for Aidan, we need him to be back on his game in this final month of play. On Saturday, Will Campbell went the distance for a 4-hit complete game shutout which was the 2nd in 1 week after Charley Olson shutout Northeastern the prior Saturday. That shutout was a school-record 7th on the season. Sunday would see more great pitching from Justin Malone as he went 7.1 innings and allowed 3 runs yet did not factor in the decision. Sunday's 24th home win is also a new record for Georgia State (prior record of 23 completed in 2008 and 2010). Jake Dyer earned two saves over the weekend and the relief pitching did not give up any runs to the Hofstra Pride.

The Panther bats piled up 49 hits on the weekend to produce 31 runs. Mark Micowski and Rob Lind are hot at the plate right now and this team is going to score runs when these two are on their game. Mark went 8-for-12 at the plate with 3 walks and 3 RBIs. Rob went 10-for-13 with 8 RBIs. Another note, Ryan Fleming hit a monster home run over the right field scoreboard and they're still waiting for it to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere. That blast was Ryan's 12th on the season.

The Panthers will travel to Wilmington this coming weekend for an important series with UNC-Wilmington. Hopefully this will be the first of two trips the Panthers make to Brooks Field in May.

Kennesaw State Baseball Visits Panthersville

The 27-11 Georgia State Panthers baseball team hosts the 21-18 Kennesaw State Owls today at 6 PM for the 2nd and final matchup of the 2011 season. GSU defeated the Owls on March 23rd in Kennesaw by a score of 6-3 after a dominant outing by pitcher Will Campbell.

Freshman reliever and recent mid-week starter Sam Agnew-Wieland will get the start today for the Panthers. This will be his 3rd start of the season and he's 2-0 with a 2.16 ERA. Sam has a WHIP of 0.96 and has struck out 29 batters in 25 innings pitched (11 total appearances). Opposing batters are hitting just .202 on him for the season and have managed only 2 extra base hits, both doubles. Sam's wins have come against a powerful Mercer lineup and Alabama State.

The Owls will send sophomore Catlan Kendrick against Sam. Catlan is 1-0 with a 2.78 ERA and will also be making his 3rd start on the season and 11th total appearance. He's pitched 22.2 innings with a WHIP of 1.32 while opposing hitters are batting .274 against him. He' thrown 17 strikeouts on the season. Catlan pitched the 9th inning in the 6-3 GSU win and allowed 1 hit and walked 1 but allowed no runs to score.

The Georgia State lineup is hitting .314 as a team currently led by Mark Micowski who's hitting .369. Sophomore Drew Shields is now hitting .362 and has really stepped up for the Panthers during Joey Wood's injury. The team is scoring 7.7 runs per game on the season. Micowksi, Brandon Williams and Rob Lind all had a 3-hit game against the Owls in March.

KSU is hitting .278 as a team and has scored an average of 6.1 runs per game this season. Ronnie Freeman, who was 2-for-4 in the first game, leads the team with a .367 average. Ethan Herron also had a 2-for-4 day against the Panthers in March and is hitting .328 on the season. Home run leader Andy Chriscaden homered in the March meeting and drove in 2 runs. He still leads the KSU offense with 9 home runs and 45 RBIs.

I expect the Panthers to complete the season sweep over the Owls in front of the home crowd. GO PANTHERS!!!

A Look at GSU Baseball in the NCAA Rankings

I was looking over the NCAA statistics this morning and kept running across "Georgia St." at or near the top of many offensive catagories so I wanted to toot the horn of the team, the guys below and the coaching staff. The following is where the team ranks in all of NCAA...

It's a great thing to be able to tell people "Georgia State baseball is one of the best offenses in the country", when you're trying to get them out to a game. Oh yeah, we have some pretty darn good pitching to boot. Come out and see this high power offense in a very important 3-game series with Old Dominion this weekend, Friday through Sunday. Game times are at 6 PM on Friday and 1 PM on Saturday and Sunday.

Panthers Baseball Remains Unbeaten Against Ivy League

The Panthers defeated the Harvard Crimson today by a score of 9-3. Will Campbell had an odd first inning allowing 2 runs on 2 hits, 2 walks and 3 steals. He settled in and pitched another 5 innings allowing a total of 6 hits and 3 runs. Our outstanding freshman Sam Agnew-Wieland entered and pitched a quick 2 innings allowing only 1 hit and recorded 2 strikeouts, I know, what's new. Zach Chastain closed the game for the Panthers in the 9th. Zach has now pitched 5.1 innings without giving up an earned run.

I give the game ball on offense to Joey Wood after going 2-for-3 with 4 RBI's including a 2-run HR to left center field in the 5th inning. Joey received the start in left field today to allow Brett Maxwell the day off. Drew Shields had a productive game going 3-for-4 and driving 2 runs. Mark Micowski, Rob Lind and Carter Sackett also had a multi-hit day at the plate.

Box Score: 3 Runs, 8 Hits and 1 Error for the Crimson; 9 Runs, 14 Hits and no Errors for the Panthers

The Panthers host out-of-conference Murray State for a 3-game series Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Game times are at 6 PM, 1PM and 1PM respectively. Sunny skies ahead so wear the sunscreen when you get out there this weekend, especially on Saturday. Should be in the upper 70's for tomorrow's first pitch, sitting around 80 on Saturday and Sunday will be a little cooler in the high 60's.

Harvard Will Attempt to Outperform Georgia State...

...on the baseball field that is. For the first time in history Georgia State will host Harvard on the diamond tomorrow, Wednesday the 17th, at 5 PM. This is only the 2nd Ivy League school Georgia State has faced. The only other meeting with an Ivy League opponent was in 1998 when GSU home-swept the Cornell Big Red at Panthersville in a 3-game series. This game comes two days after the Panthers beat the Alabama State Hornets 14-4 bringing their record on the 2011 season to CAA best 14-4.

Who: Harvard University Crimson, competes in NCAA D1 Ivy League play. Harvard enters tomorrow's game with a 1-9 record, their first win coming tonight over Kennesaw State University in a late-inning meltdown by the KSU pitching staff.

Previous Season: Harvard finished the 2010 season with a 17-26 record and near the bottom of the Ivy League in both pitching and offense.

Harvard at the Plate: The team is batting .241 with a .309 on-base percentage. Not much power has been displayed, their slugging only .306 with just 1 home run and 1 triple. This production is scoring about 3.2 runs per game. At the plate the team is striking out 3 times for every 1 walk earned. Junior Jeff Reynolds is leading the Crimson at the plate with a .367 and is the only starter hitting over .300.

Harvard on the Mound: The Harvard starting pitcher is currently unknown. Prior to today's game, the team ERA was 7.94 and they were allowing a little over 8 runs per game. That doesn't cut it and if you were wondering why they were 0-9 heading into today, averaging 3 runs on offense while allowing 8 is the reason. The Crimson have 1 pitcher who has not allowed a run and that pitcher is senior Zachery Hofeld. Hofeld earned the win against Kennesaw after pitching 4 innings of relief work and allowing only 1 hit and no runs. It's safe to say the Panthers will likely not see him tomorrow. Marcus Way and Joey Novak appear to be the potential starters as of now. Marcus is 0-1 and given up 8 runs in 3.2 innings pitched. Joey has given up 9 runs in 5.1 innings. Both pitchers have a WHIP (walks+hits per inning) of near 3.0. Give this Panthers lineup an average of 3 hits and/or walks per inning and they're going to put up some runs on you in a hurry considering the speed and ability to steal bases.

GSU at the Plate: The Panthers lineup is coming off a game with 13 hits and 14 runs scored so the bats are likely tuned in right now. The team is hitting .292 led by outfielder Brett Maxwell who sports a cool .442 average and leads the team in doubles with 7. Rob Lind enters the game with a streak of 14 consecutive plate appearances in which he reached base by walk or hit. Rob Lind leads the CAA with 26 walks in 79 plate appearances. This is not good for the opposing teams because once Rob is on base, he leads the Panthers with 6 steals and 9 attempts. The Panthers are 35-for-46 as a team. Mark Micowski is coming off a nice game at the plate after going 3-for-4 with a walk and 3 RBI's. Mark leads the Panthers with 17 RBI's. It's not everyday you see a lead-off hitter with the team high in RBI's. This is a testament to the production coming from the bottom of the lineup for the Panthers.

GSU on the Mound: Senior righty Will Campbell takes the mound for the Panthers bringing along a 3-0 record, one of 6 CAA pitchers holding a 3-o record (3 are Panthers). Will has a 2.62 ERA and opposing hitters are only batting .165 against him which is good for the best in the CAA. He has a WHIP of .83 after allowing a total of 13 hits and 7 walks in his 24 innings pitched. This is a great number for a starter. Will has allowed only one extra base hit coming in form of a double. The Panthers relief staff continues their outstanding work. There are 5 relievers (with minimum of 1 inning) who have opponent batting averages at or below .200 and they have yet to allow the long ball. The Panthers as a team have still allowed only 5 home runs with 3 from the Mercer game.

I expect an easy game for the Panthers tomorrow. Barring them being off their game (by a ton) tomorrow they should move on to this weekend's home series with Murray State owning a 15-4 record. The Panthers do everything better than the Crimson of Harvard. I know Kennesaw State was saying the same thing 12 hours ago but they are in somewhat of a funk right now. The Panthers are good, really good. Really good teams beat bad teams. GO PANTHERS!!!

GSU Baseball Welcomes Alabama State on Tuesday

The Georgia State Panthers baseball team will face off against the Alabama State Hornets today at 5 PM, weather permitting. Let's hope the weather does cooperate today as last year's 2 games vs Alabama State resulted in a 27-3 and 23-1 offensive attack on the Hornets. What a nice way to get everyone's confidence up on seeing the ball well at the plate. The Panthers enter today's game with a 13-4 record sitting atop the CAA. The Hornets are 5-5 (I incorrectly stated 4-5-1 previously) and will be rusty as they haven't played since Sunday, March 6th. I hope this game is the needed catalyst to get much of the team bats on a hot streak.

Who: The Alabama State Hornets compete in NCAA D1 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). This is the 2nd SWAC team GSU will have faced this season. The Panthers swept Texas Southern in a 3-game home series to open the 2011 season. The Hornets finished the 2010 season with a 13-28 record. This is a veteran team coming in as they only lost 1 letterwinner and no starters from 2010. Coach Frady has not lost to a SWAC opponent as Head Coach of GSU. GSU does share a 2011 common opponent with ASU in Mercer University. ASU lost 0-8, 1-9 and 2-18 at Mercer in the end of February. The Panthers beat Mercer 14-5 right before the ASU-Mercer series.

ASU at the Plate: ASU is batting .240 as a team and is scoring 6.2 runs per game however they have scored under 4 runs in 5 games and over 7 in only 3. Starting left fielder (Jr.) Jordan Mims leads the starters on offense with a .333 batting average and 5 RBI's. Senior Catcher Jourdan Mott is the batting .313 and leads the team with 10 RBI's and 2 home runs. The Hornets have only 11 doubles, no triples and 3 home runs as a team. Mims and Mott are the only 2 regular starters batting over .300. They steal bases with success when they do decide to run as they've only been caught stealing in 1 of 23 attempts.

ASU on the Mound: The Hornets have a staff ERA of 6.15 through 10 games. They have given up 7 runs per game in 2010. They have a couple starters who've performed well, one average and a couple who have been rocked on the mound. The starter for today's game is still un-announced by ASU. Outside of senior righty Devin Dominquez, the Hornet relief staff has not been good this season.

GSU at the Plate: Rob Lind and Ryan Fleming will look to continue their hot streak at the plate after bringing their averages up to .245 and .283 respectively. Fleming had 2 game-winning hits against Towson and had a 3-run home run in Sunday's finale. Rob racked up a .867 on-base percentage in the series. Outfielder Brett Maxwell still leads the team with a .442 batting average while Mark Micowski and Ryan Fleming are leading the team with 12 RBI's each.

GSU on the Mound: Right hand redshirt sophomore Brandon Bast will get his first start for GSU. Brandon is a Panther newcomer this season as he transferred from Georgia Perimeter College where he put in relief work in the 2010 season. He went 1-2 with 17 strikeouts in 16 innings of relief. Brandon has worked 3 innings this season and has allowed 2 runs on 5 hits. He has given 3 walks and has 2 strikeouts in his appearances. The Panthers offense should provide a large lead for this to be a staff game on the mound. I would guess Brandon pitches 4 or 5 innings before giving way to some relievers for work to stay fresh.

This should be an easy game for the Panthers and could be the first game of the season to top 20 runs. The current high for runs scored is 14 when the Panthers beat Mercer 14-5 in Macon. Good luck to Brandon in his first start tonight!

Panthers Open CAA-Play with Sweep over Towson

The Panthers baseball team opened their 2011 conference play in the best possible fashion by sweeping the Towson Tigers in a 3-game series at Panthersville. There was no better way to return the favor to Towson after they swept the Panthers in the 2010 season. The Panthers are now 13-4 on the season and 3-0 in the CAA.

Ryan Flemming had a great offensive showing in the series with 3 hits and 8 walks in 15 at-bats. That's a .429 batting average and a .733 on-base percentage. Ryan also accounted for 6 RBI's in the series with a 3-run home run during game 3. Rob Lind also had a great series going 6-for-8 (.750 BA) and drawing 7 walks for a .867 on-base percentage. A congratulations goes to Theo Asher for hitting his first home run as a Panther in the 5th inning. He hit a solo shot off a 3-2 pitch in the 5th inning to open the Panther's lead to 8-4.

The Panther's relief pitchers stepped up big when called upon this weekend only allowing 1 (earned) run in their 11.2 innings pitched during the 3 games. The lone run came off typical starter Will Campbell as he relieved Charley Olsen for 3 innings to earn the win in Saturday's victory. Justin Malone proved he is human after all and allowed 5 runs in his Friday start after going 5.1 innings. He had 6 K's and 2 walks in the outing. Nick Squeglia entered in relief for Justin and pitched 3 innings allowing only 2 hits. Jake Dyer would earn the win in his 1.2 innings of perfect relief.

Charley Olsen started Saturday's game and went 6 innings of what felt like a rough outing however he allowed only 3 runs in the game. His issue came from 4 walks and the Towson hitters getting clutch hits. Charley showed his composure through his jams and even through a pick-off to 1st to and a 5th inning scoring threat. Previous to the pick-off, Brett Maxwell gunned down a runner at home coming from 2nd base on a single to center field.

Aidan Francis pitched 5 innings in Sunday's win allowing 6 runs (5 earned) on 9 hits and allowed only 1 walk. Jeremy Gazerro and Jake Dyer pitched 4 innings of combined no-run relief allowing only 2 hits and 1 walk.

The Panthers are now sitting in 1st place in the CAA.

This week's opponents feature Alabama State (4-5-1), Harvard (0-8) and Murray State (8-7) all at Panthersville. The Panthers are 8-0 against Alabama State under Frady and have not faced Harvard or Murray State under Frady.

GSU Baseball Checkup 2/28/2011

With the first full week of the season in the books I'd like to take a look at where the Panthers stand and compare to the rest of the CAA.

First off, the baseball Panthers are 7-1 through the first 8 games of the 2011 season. In comparison to last year that's 5 wins better, even if you remove the opening series against #7 ranked FSU it's 2 wins better. The top three teams in the CAA are currently GSU @ 7-1, James Madison @ 7-1 and George Mason @ 6-2.

I think the obvious statement of the season so far would be this: the new bat rule IS affecting offensive production. The Panthers scored 72 runs through the first 8 games in the 2010 season (9 RPG). The run total for this season so far is 55 or 6.9 RPG which is far below the 2010 total of 10.5 RPG. I have personally seen about 6-8 balls hit (by the Panthers) to the outfield and caught for outs that would have been a home run last year. Just for the Panthers to keep up with last year's production they will have to score 17.9 RPG over the next 8 games and I don't see this happening, especially considering the next 3 opponents are Georgia Tech, Iowa and Mississippi State. The point is, run production for the Panthers is down thus far however they are 3rd in the CAA for runs scored behind George Mason (72) and James Madison (132). Yes, you read that correctly. Allow me to expand on JMU for a minute.

Can someone check the bats the JMU baseball team is carrying around??? Here's some numbers for you. 132 runs scored (2nd best is GM at 72), batting .431 as a team (2nd best is GM at .327), 29 home runs (2nd best is GSU at 8) and slugging .869 (2nd best is GM at .472). Those are crazy numbers my friends. In addition they've stolen 29 of 31 bases and you're next best in that category would be GSU at 20 of 23. You may say to yourself, "well they probably strike out alot with those numbers." Nope, they're currently sitting on the lowest K/AB ratio in the CAA. Now that I may have frightened you about JMU's offensive production let's move on.

Back to the GSU offense for a quick look at individual performances. Brett Maxwell, Joey Wood and Bryan Condotta are the only three Panthers batting over .300. Maxwell leads the team at .444. There are 13 CAA batters with higher averages, 8 on the JMU squad. Joey Wood (leads in slugging on the Panthers), Rob Lind and Ryan Fleming both have 2 home runs each. Mark Micowski is repeating his early 2010 performance with a somewhat slow start. He's hitting .281 but does have (team leading) 7 RBIs.

It's undisputable that the early season MVP goes to the GSU pitching staff. After being a middle of the road crew last season, the Panthers are sporting the league's lowest team ERA at 2.34 (starters at 1.99). The next best is Old Dominion at 3.04 and VCU at 3.38. The Panthers also lead in shutouts with 3 (2nd best is UNCW with 1) and opposing hitters are batting only .214 against them which is also best in the CAA. A stat I like looking at is walks and hits per inning pitched (WHIP). The Panthers lead here with a ratio of just over 1.0. Here's where I can give you some comfort if you're still scared about JMU. Their team WHIP is near 2.0 and team ERA is 7.94. The Panthers have proven to be a far superior pitching team thus far and typically pitching wins games. Good pitching will cool off hot hitting. James Madison has their record because of their offense. Our series against them will be an interesting one for sure.

This needs to stand out and be seen because these guys have worked their tails off for us so far. In the top 5 of CAA pitchers with an ERA of 0.00 who've gone the most innings you'll find 4 Panthers. Starters Justin Malone and Nick Squeglia as well as relievers Jake Dyer and Sam Agnew-Wieland. Jake (junior) and Sam (freshman) are both new additions to the pitching squad for the 2011 season. Good job guys.

The worst news for the season so far is the fielding effort. The Panthers find themselves dead in the middle for fielding percentage in the CAA. I'll be honest, I assumed we were bottom 3 so this is good news I guess. The defense has turned the most double plays at 10, some of which being highlight makers and ERA savers.

Well that's it for now. We'll look at the run production level in another couple weeks after we have more data. My early guess is that RPG will edge closer to 8/8.5 but I don't see it reaching last year's NCAA leading number of 10.5.

On to Tech!

Georgia State Baseball (4-0) vs Western Illinois (0-3)

Who: Western Illinois Fighting Leathernecks (we'll call them WIFL for short), compete in the NCAA D1 Summit League. The Leathernecks baseball team has not had much success in recent years due to Oral Roberts run of the conference. The team returns 7 of 9 starter position players and only 5 of 15 pitchers from last year and enters Friday's game with a record of 0-3 after being swept at Samford. This is the first matchup with Western Illinois.

Previous Season: WIFL finished the 2010 season with a 14-39 overall record finishing 8th (last) in the Summit League.

Western Illinois at the Plate: The Leathernecks are currently batting .204 as a team. They have not shown much offensive ability thus far as they've scored only 9 runs. The team has 7 extra base hits, 2 being HRs. They've walked 11 times and went down swinging 37 times through 103 at-bats. They do have a speed threat in outfielder Anthony Kaskadden who is 4 of 4 in stolen base attempts in his 3 games. Interesting note, all 4 stolen bases came in one game. I don't expect much luck for them against our pitching staff.

Western Illinois on the Mound: The starters are 0-3 and the team is enjoying an 8.62 ERA coming into Friday. I see this number being increased when the Leathernecks leave town Sunday. The starters (all rightys) are as follows:

Beau Below, Senior - Rough first outing for Beau. 0-1 with a 36.00 ERA after giving up 9 runs in his first and only inning of work. Batters hit .800 against him.

Ryan Wachholder, Junior - Ryan, also 0-1, gave up 5 runs on 8 hits in his 5 innings pitched. He does have 5 strikeouts and only 1 walk to go with it. Ryan is a new addition to the team and pitched well at his previous community college.

Alexander Zarate, Junior - 0-1. Gave up 6 runs on 5 hits in 4 innings pitched. Zarate is another community college transfer and was an effective pitcher in 2010. He didn't see much action in 2009.

Dustin Hunter, Junior - Has appeared in 2 games, pitching 1.2 innings of relief work and has been touched for 7 runs. Yet another community college transfer posting a 10-4 record in his first two years.

The Leathernecks have only 1 relief pitcher who has thrown 1 or more innings without giving up a run. Chris Fuchs had 1 clean inning of work allowing no hits and striking out 1.

Georgia State at the Plate: After the offensive breakout at Mercer on Tuesday, the Panthers are now batting .295 as a team. Improved but there's still room to grow especially considering Micowski is still trying to get going. Nothing wrong with a slow start (Mark Texeira anyone?) as long as you get going before the conference play, or preferably the GT game. Senior Brett Maxwell (OF) is currently leading the CAA in batting average at .727 and he's 3 for 4 in stolen bases. Rob Lind will look to continue his blasting efforts after hitting 2 out of the park at Mercer. The lineup should look the same as it did on opening day.

Georgia State on the Mound: Justin Malone, Nick Squeglia, Will Campbell and Charley Olsen will take the mound for the Panthers. All of these starters are 1-0 on the season and Campbell is the only one with an ERA above 0.00, at a cool 1.29. Justin gave up 7 hits in his 6 inning effort on opening day but kept the runs from crossing. Nick gave up only 3 hit in 5 innings with 3 K's. Will Campbell had a great first outing giving the bullpen some relief by going 7 innings and giving up only 1 run. Charley gave relief to Aidan Francis at Mercer and earned the win while going 4 innings giving up only 3 hits and 1 run. Charley sent away 7 batters by strikeout in his outing.


The Panthers outmatch the Fighting Leathernecks in all phases of the game. Georgia State will be looking to carry an 8-0 record into Russ Chandler Stadium for in-state showdown with Georgia Tech next Wednesday. Get out and enjoy the beautiful weather and what's sure to be an offensive attack on the Leathernecks pitching staff at Panthersville! GO PANTHERS!!!

Diamond Panthers Play Long Ball to Down Mercer

The trend of the away team taking the victory continued today as the Panthers win at Mercer, 14-5. This game featured another great pitching effort by the Panthers and the offensive breakout we hoped for.

Starting pitcher Aidan Francis gave up 4 earned runs off 3 home runs. Because of the power in the Mercer lineup, keeping people off base was a key to this game. Francis fanned 8 and walked only 2 batters in his 4.2 innings. Charley Olsen saw his first action of the season as he came in relief. Olsen went 4 innings giving up 1 run (unearned) and striking out 7 while only walking 1. Josh Chesler came in to get a pop fly to right field for the final out of the game. In total, the pitchers gave up 4 earned runs, striking out 15 and walking only 3.

Have a day Rob Lind! Rob went 2 for 6, both hits for home runs in the 6th and 7th inning, picking up 5 RBIs. Ryan Fleming and Carter Sackett also went deep collecting 3 RBIs each. It's good to see the power come around. The Panthers batted .400 with runners in scoring position.

The one area of the game that went wrong today was with fielding. The Panthers recorded 5 errors on defense, luckily this didn't hand the game over to Mercer. I have a feeling there's going to be some major fielding drills going on in the next few practices.
